I agree with what you said, Newbie, about refusing to decipher atrocious handwriting. I won't do it, either. But I also won't teach it, not in middle school. That's not what I teach. (Also, in Colorado, there is no benchmark for "handwriting" in the state standards). They spend (read:waste) an entire YEAR on this in third grade already.
