I have never heard of an LD in spelling, though I guess you never know! Maybe if yo do some research online, from books, or even talk to a professional in that area, you may get some answers. I would definetly find out how
the girl studies for her tests. It's amazing how a lot of kids just stare at the words for 10 minutes and except to know them all. Though some kids do fine with that method, a lot of kids don't. I would definetly find out how she studies. Then try some different ways until you find one way that works. The nice thing about spelling tests, is that students know EVERYTHING that's going to
be on the test! They know the words, making it a little easier to study. Maybe you suggest the student look over the words every night of the week for 10-15 minutes and then have her parents quiz her. They say the word and give her some time. She writes the word down on a sheet of paper. When all the words are done, the girl or her parents can check the words. Then they can focus on the ones she struggles with. Practicing throughout the week may really help her. It might also help to focus on only a few words a night. Say there are 20 words. Then on Monday she learn 7, Tuesday 7, Wednesday 6, and Thursday night she reviews them all for the test on Friday. Taking it in smaller steps may help. Teaching some mnemonic devices for words may help as well. I have another way she can study, too, though she will need access to a blank cassette tape and tape player were can she can record herself. With her word list, she can say the word in the microphone and wait about 10-15 seconds. Then say the next word. When she's all done recording, she can take out a sheet of paper and give herself the test listening to the tape. When she finishes all of the words, she can take out her word list and correct the test.
