books By Mary

I teach sixth grade language arts in a middle school and I have an ENORMOUS childrens/young adult library. I mean, I'm about to fill my fourth bookcase! I of course have paid for these books myself (or used my points) because| I believe that I need to have, in my classroom, a wide array of literature. I send home a letter though, on the first or second day of school that states that if your child loses or destroys a book, they must pay for it. It must be returned, signed, before a child can check out books from my library. I have really only had a few kids lose books, but if they do, I always make them |
| pay for it, and they always pay. I figure that even if I got it with points, it takes time or money to replace, and besides, you can't lose stuff that belongs to other people and not expect to have to pay for it. I promise you that if I set up my library in your school, those kids would pay for anything they lost.Regarding literature sets, you can get sets free with your points in the back of the Scholastic book order (sometimes the front) in the glossy pages. I have picked up four or five lit. sets this year, absolutely free. Of course, they have to be offering books you'll want, but I am very excited about the titles I'll be able to do with my reading groups. I get so sick of the stuff the school has, and they never buy anything new.
