The test has 3 batteries. You can give the basic battery which is Language Arts and Math,or the complete battery which adds science and social studies, and finally, you can add the tests for word analysis, math computation, and vocabulary for the complete battery plus. I did it all. We completed 2 or three parts each day and finished in good time. They got a little tired, but I made sure they all ate breakfast, and had breaks as often as possible. Some kids actually enjoyed the testing. It is almost all oral, except for much of the reading test, which was pretty hard, the second story was definately second grade material. This is the only standardized test first graders take in our district. We also use the Star Early Literacy test which is oral and on the computer, which they enjoy. I give this one 3 times a year. They also take a Star Math assessment at the beginnng and end of the year for math level placement. This is new for us this year. And yes, they really are assessed regularly, because they are picking up so many skills over the year and you need to constantly check that they are getting it. I'd say don't worry about the Terra Nova unless your school puts too much emphasis on the test results and forgets that your observations of your students should be weighed heavily in how they are evaluated. Good luck!
