I think you do need to put it in writing. I understand that you don't want to hurt her feelings, but if you don't evaluate her honestly, she will be with you next year, or she'll be foisted on someone else. Either way, she'll never get better. In fact, start documenting each incident now. Encourage her to read this recorded information, respond to it, set goals, learn from her errors. Write all your directions down for her, including the "no shhhhing rule". Refer to this list often and update it as needed. Good luck - maybe you can train yourself a really good assistant! (she said optomistically )
