I work in a small school district. I even know my superintindent. The principal is wonderful and we talk on personal levels. It's different in a smaller district. When we have a Christmas party it's the entire school (K-12). Advantages are that everyone knows you and your family which can be nice (it can also be a disadvantage at times). Another is that we are a very close group and talk to each other easily during school hours. We have small class sizes. The downside is that the pay is $10,000 less with a Master's degree. Starting no Master's is about $4000 less. It seems we are not progressing the same as larger schools. Kindergarten still teaches a letter a week. We do not get any stipend pay for things like student council or tutoring. Right now I'm struggling with the right choice for me. I'm scared to move onto a bigger district for fear of not getting along with administration or not being a super teacher. Where I'm at now I am a super teacher. I always worry that what I'm doing might not be good enough for a bigger district. How do you know? My child went to the bigger district where we live his first year. He was reading by semester but later in life wouldn't have the chance to participate in sports because it is so competitive. There is a superb education/competitive sports in the big district. There is a decent education/more social chances in the small district. I just don't know what's right for me and my family in my life. Would you go back to a smaller district for that family atmosphere? Would you rather be in the bigger district and give that up? I know during my college practicums, in the bigger district, the principal had no clue I was even there after the first meeting. The smaller district is more laid back. Students still wear Halloween costumes. We still celebrate Christmas as opposed to winter party. Parents are very involved. Very tough decisions to make.
