I have found that teaching students to recognize the traits of good writing helps them identify how they can make their writing better. Yes, I am a 6+1 Traits follower. It has given me the language to teach my students exactly HOW to revise. For example, the trait of organization encompasses the development of ideas. We look for places in our writing that we can eloborate on and add details, no matter the genre. I have also found that my writing along with them, and sharing my revisions, naming them specifically, helps. I think nine year olds are very capable of conveying their ideas in a well written, engaging way. Don't give up - revision is the main stay of good writing!
