Ability Groups
By Teach 3rd

Clip to ScrapBook
In the past, we have grouped heterogeniously. I thought it was better so you could have peer tutors and good modeling going on. However, we are now a Reading First school and we must go by RESEARCH!! We can not have a
hit and miss plan. It has to be researched based and not just what works in one class room. Research states that students should be grouped in same ability groups. That is what we do and it works great. I agree with some of the others. We are flexible and the groups are always changing! No child should be left stagnant in a group. They should be changing (up or down) to meet their
individual needs. My kids are not called low, medium, high. They have fun group names. These type of groups help me to meet the needs of these children and that is what counts! NO this is not illegal!!!!!!!! The state says we will do this since we are Reading First.
