Your post reminded me of a funny situation I encountered once. During lunch, I happened to be in the room when the K students were talking about sign language and hand signals. One of the students asked me "when you do| this (extend your thumb, pointer finger and pinky finger), what does it mean?" I gave a quick answer about sign language and then added that sometimes I have seen "surfers" in movies or cartoons make that sign (the students were arguing about that earlier). They seemed to be satisfied with that answer and moved on to talk about other things. A few minutes later, one of the students from | | the other side of the room yells out, "But it's bad to do this, right?" and points his middle finger at the rest of the class to show me what he meant. He was so clueless, I almost started laughing at him. He really had no idea he was doing anything wrong. Fortunately, the rest of the class was very sensitive and some of them smirked and snickered, but they basically kept quiet as I explained that "yes, you are not allowed to do that in school, not even to show someone else what you are talking about."Anyway, I havent been in your exact situation, and I'm not sure if you are just sharing or if you are concerned. I wouldn't be concerned, though; that age group has some of the most interesting conversations.
