It is depressing

I like subbing grades 4 through 8. I go into some schools where me and the custodian are the only men in the building. I went into a room where the boys were gang signing and their teacher didn't even know what they were
doing. The school has a policy against it, but she was young and clueless. I brought that to a halt. Maybe half of all these boys (and girls, but I am talking about the boys here) that you see come from broken homes and rarely, and sometimes never, see their fathers. Heck, let's just say it; some of them don't even know their father's identity. I try to make a quiet example of how a man

behaves. One thing I do is that I always let the ladies go first. "But today is the boys turn!" Not while I am here. The ladies always go through the door first. I know it is not PC, but it might be the only manners they ever practice.
