Ability Groups for Guided Reading
By AmberM

Clip to ScrapBook
I always have put my students in ability groups when they come to me for guided reading groups. It's the only way I can meet the needs of the "slower" learners and to accelerate the "strong" ones. If I taught whole group all to the median then those behind would be stuck and not progress, and the advanced would not get the extra challange and possibly become bored. The children know that they read different books with in their group, but I don't think they realize that they are split by ability.I have never heard of ability grouping within the classroom as illegal. I have do know that our state no longer allows classrooms that are all slow, or all excelled. We do have Discovery and Gifted classes where students leave their regular classrooms for enrichment.
