I am lucky, in the schools I sub at the teachers and administrators are VERY supportive of subs and back me up. I agree that students will try to get away with behavior with a sub that they know better than to try with their regular teacher and I make it a point to remind my self of that like you. Some days I feel like I have been a real meanie because I have had to come down on the students, but surprisingly, I have had students from the classes that I have felt the meanest in say to me when they see me on another day, "You're the nice sub that came to our class". This has made me realize that the students expect me to uphold the behavior standards and don't hold it against me even if they fight it all the way.
