social stories
By jjj

Clip to ScrapBook
There is a program my counselor used called Social Stories. I don't know if there is a website-- my folder is at school-----
You pick a behavior that you want to extinguish. You write a short paragraph/story using the
child's age, an experience she would have; and give examples of appropriate behavior.

Jane is sitting in her science class. She sees John, a boy she likes. Jane looks at John's face and smiles at him and says ,"Hello." Later in the day, Jane sees John in the hallway. Jane waves at John and smiles at him.

So you read the story daily and discuss what can YOU do when you see Bob

that you like???? The story is all positives-- what is socially appropriate, what are the steps to be with the group.

I had success with social stories with a child who has autism and she was able to verbalize then do what we had read.
