Dick and Jane Readers
By Carol

Clip to ScrapBook
I learned to read IN SPITE OF Dick and Jane.
Dick and Jane books did not teach phonetic reading. I had to be sent away to get phonics.

Dick and Jane were some of the first sight/reading books introduced into this country.

My experiences wised me up. While other kids were reading sat, mat, and hat, my five-year-old was reading "The strangest thing happened yesterday. I found a skunk,"

She could read because I taught her to read using phonics. THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO WISE UP.
