Mondays and Fridays

I use Monday to introduce the new vocabulary words for the basal story, and also concentrate on whatever Saxon phonics concept is used for our spelling words of the week. We read whole group the story that goes with the Saxon
program (words in story match spelling sound). Our basal stories are on tape so after introducing those vocab. words we usually listen to and follow along in the book as we listen to the story tape.
I use Friday as assesment day. They take spelling test, phonics assessment and reading comprehension test over the story in our basal. every other Friday I have them come individually

to read a short paragraph to me so I can check their oral reading on something they have not seen before. I mark them like DRA and give them an oral reading grade. While I have them come individually I do let them work as pairs at a center of their choice. I also pull out extra puzzles and tape recorders. They love to make tapes of themselves reading!
