And you know what is even worse than tons of grammar instruction? Spelling! Research has been saying for years now that memorizing lists and taking tests does absolutely nothing for spelling, because the ability to spell well is not the ability to memorize words and rules, but is the ability to visually image. Yet we have teachers who do the weekly spelling lists and tests, one teacher who even does spelling bees, and it cracks me up that they haven't noticed that their kids spell no better than the kids who learn authentically, from their own writing. I guess they just like grading spelling tests. And don't even get me STARTED about wasting time on handwriting!
