Clip to ScrapBook
I think the biggest thing is being able to write a paragraph with 5 good sentences. The main thing I've had to "break" my students of in writing is starting their paragraph with "I'm going to tell you about...." and ending
their paragraph with "That's all I'm going to tell you about....". That wastes 2 good sentences! Of course that's all you're all going to tell me about, because your paragraph is over. We teach them to restate the prompt in the first sentence (ex: A special time I had with my friend was at her birthday party last month.), and give an emotion or thought in the last sentence (ex: I can't
wait until the next birthday party!). If we can get them to write decent paragraphs coming from 2nd grade, we can show them how to add more exciting words, better verbs, similes, etc... and transition into 3 paragraph essays. As it is now, I'm spending a good part of the year trying to get bad habits broken.
