ADHD tips By mom

I am a teacher and I also have a son who has been diagnosed with ADHD. If I were you, I would first talk to the girl's parents and let them know how difficult the mornings have been. They need to have this info. from you| so that they can be aware of the situation and contact the doctor if necessary. If you have already tried this and the parents are not being cooperative, talk with the school nurse. As a previous poster has said when a child is experiencing medication wear off, jitterness, irritability, and severe overactivity may result. ADHD children need structure and routines in the classroom. | | Any stimuli can set them off--extreme noise, lights, colors, activity, etc. Because this student has a diagnosis and is disruptive to others, you can provide her with alternate activities while teaching the class. A quiet listening center with headphones, or computer time may provide time for her to relax and calm down from all of the classroom activity. If you have a special education teacher,or guidance counselor in the building ask for help. They may be able to provide you with helpful strategies and information. The most important point I want to make, however, is to accept this student and form a bond. Yes, it can be very difficult in the classroom (and at home) and frustration can cause us to lose our cool. ADHD students can sense this, however, and it only frustates them more. Most ADHD children need lots of support, positive interaction, and help with peer friendships. I know this is challenging for you, but always realize that you can have such a positive impact on this child. Good luck!
