Hi.

It seems to me that when I was student teaching last year (my 1st placement was with first graders.) My master teacher told me one day that if they get squirley, then it never hurts to have them put their heads down for 5 minutes.

I agree with reading stories. That will very much calm them down, however you might try this as well.
