Challenging 1st grade class

I had a real needy group of first-graders this past week, they were very, very challenging; all the teachers even told me so. I followed nearly all of the teachers lesson plan, but they were totally out of control during and after PE. When they came back I sat them down on the carpet and read them 3 stories before attempting to do anything else, and this really settled them down. I have found with younger kids if you can fit in reading stories into the lesson plan, this always helps. Always try to carry out the teacher's lesson plan first though.
