At the start of the day, I tell them

I tell new classes (the others know this already) that I will be leaving Ms. X or Mr. X a letter at the end of the day and among the information, I will include 2 lists - a list of names of students who worked well and a list of names of those who didn't and it's up to them to decide which list their names will go on. I sometimes even start my list on the chalk board but remind the kids that since it's written in chalk, I can always change them if their behaviour improves.... I think it's good for them to know that they are accountable to their regular teacher for their behaviour.
