Sometimes when I am reading a book to the class, I will stop and say, "You know this makes me wonder. I don't understand what that means. What do you think is happening?" They have figured
out that I probably really know, but am helping them question and be active in the reading of the story.

Also, when assigning something, I often do a few with them. Some books (Language, Math) have guided practice. I have them put the heading on their paper, number the paper for the guided practice, and we do those one at a time together. Just before they begin on the others, I say,

"If you need a little more help, go over to my chair, and I will be there in a minute." I think this gives them a chance at help without feeling embarrassed. If no guided practice is provided, items can be put on the board, overhead, etc. to be done together.
