All these take an extra 3-4 minutes because I let the kids do it with minimal help from me. I also try to connect it somehow to standards such as ordinal numbers. Have kids line up in alphabetical order by first name. Use popsicle sticks to have kids line up by ordinal number (if they pull the stick with "third" on it, they are third in line). Use sticks with higher numbers on them and the kids have to line up by numeric order. (23, 26, 31, or even higher 103, 134, 156, etc.) Line up by color shirt of the rainbow - ROYGBIV. Line up by who is ready first since I find those kids are usually the more responsible ones and I can be more towards the back of the line! Take a clipboard and paper, and write down who is being good and reward them immediately after with recognition, and build it into a class popcorn party or something. Or those people get 5 extra minutes of free time, or a no homework pass for a night, or whatever they will like. Line up by height. What drives me nuts is that I am very strict in the hallway, and the other teacher isn't! So I look like the bad guy, BUT all the other teachers appreciate it since our building is so hot most of the doors are open.
