classroom management
By Newbie

Clip to ScrapBook
It stinks that you have to go watch other people's classes, but I know that sometimes happens.

I think the most important thing I learned in college was to have a clear set of procedures and rules with consequences that
are consistent. I am a stickler for routines and procedures, and my kids sometimes make fun of me for being what they perceive as "uptight," but it works. My classroom is neat and orderly, and they have something to do as soon as they come into my room (read, complete a quick assignment, etc.). That lets them know that they need to get down to business.

Even though this is only

my second year of teaching, I can tell a big difference between my classroom management and that of other teachers who are more relaxed and friendly with the students. Does that mean I never have problems with students' behavior? Of course, not, but it definitely helps. There's a good book by Harry Wong called The First Days of School that can help and give some tips.
