Telling Time to The Half-Hour
By Jana

Clip to ScrapBook
HI

My cooperating teacher I had years ago taught me a great straegy for telling time to the half-hour. We already know that that "Whenever BIG MINUTE HAND points straight down it always "something-thirty." (They recite
this "rule.") When we find the hour hand I have them recite "little hand, little number." This means we "pay attention" to smaller of the two numbers that the hour hand is pointing between.
When then say that number prior to saying "thirty" for half-past the hour. The students also model half-hour time on the small "Judy" clocks. We do actually locate the hour/little hand's position
first and then progress to the minute hand's position on the clock face.

I hope this helps,
I Jana
