SuperStars!
By cm

Clip to ScrapBook
Before I became a teacher, I observed a 2nd grade teacher who had taught for 25 years. She was fabulous. I found myself volunteering lots of time and learned so much from her!

For discipline she would simply write a students
name on the board. If they got a checkmark after their name (second time she had to talk to them) they had to sit at the picnic table at recess with their heads down for 5 minutes.

The best thing she did was a superstar list. She had a class roster on a clipboard and whenever she would catch kids in good behavior they would get a star. The first five kids to get to the end of

the star chart (about 10-12 blocks) would get to line up first and be dismissed before everyone else in the room. Let me tell you...if she asked them to get out paper and be ready they were jumping as soon as the superstar list was being used. She would say "thank you, Susie, for being ready and give her a star".

You can also use it sometimes for homework or being ready when the bell rings or if you simply observe an act of kindness or helpfulness.

Of course, she would try to give everyone a chance to be a superstar at some point.

By the way, once the first 5 kids reach the end you have to get out a new roster and start over.

I like it because it is a record of positive behavior and focuses on when they were good. I used to keep it within easy reach. The kids were constantly looking at it. Very fun!
