Hi Kelly. I liked your idea and I also agree that it is good to have all that information so you best know how to instruct the child. I would try both. I would show the child a small number of counting bears and ask them how many bears are there, and please count them for me. After several, you could than check for number recognition. Show them the number andd say, this is how many bears I would like you to count. Try several of these also and make note of what ones they have control over and what ones they need. Take care.
