I am a middle school teacher (6th and 7th grade) for children wtih ADD/ADHD. Classroom management is a major part of our daily routine. For the constant tapping of the feet and pencils, I would try making stress balls out| of balloons for them. (You fill a small balloon with slt or dand and tie it.) This way, their hands are occupied with something quiet. The boys are most likely trying to show off to the girls. I would set firm limits. Explain that whatever you don't get through during the class time will be homework. I would reinforce the positive behavior as much as possible. If you can "catch" one of | | these students being goood, immediately reinforce them. This will set the pattern for more positive behavior. I would also suggest having a class discussion to see how they think the problem should be handled. They may not see their behavior as a problem, but once it is pointed out, it might help. I would also use the "I messages" when talkign to the students. Most students want to please the teacher and deep down feel guilty when the true feelings of the teacher are expressed. We are humans and have feelings. And lastly, I would talk to the school pyschologist and see if he or she has any further suggestions or insights as to why this is happening. Hope all goes well.
