Clip to ScrapBook
Before phonics can be effective with kids they need phonemic awareness skills.
Many kids now don't have the background of nursery rhymes and being read to by their parents and seem to have more problems with background skills. We have taken a lot of that for granted in the past.
Can they identify words that start with the same sound, end with the same sound?
Can they tell if two words rhyme, or add a third rhyming word to a pair?
Can they repeat the beginning or ending sound of a word in isolation?
Can they substitute a different beginning sound?
Can they recognize a word by blending sounds when you say they seperately?
Work on these skills could be of help.
