Clip to ScrapBook
We use HM also. I do some of the pre-read activities and then I set the students to reading. I let them read by themselves or with a friend for the first read through. I want them to just enjoy the story before we start taking it apart. We end up reading the story several times and the students get very comfortable with the text. It takes a little longer, but I think in the long run it is worth it. I don't do every activity, but pick and choose according to their abilities and where I want them to go with the story being presented. I agree that too often the questions and activities are way over most of my classes' head, but we just keep plugging away and from the theme assessments, it seems to be working.
