For final drafts, if I catch anyone plagerizing, I give them a 0, call their parents, and give out a detention. It's not right...it's not their work. It's also not fair to the other students who took the time to put things| in their own words, which is why I'm harsh with the punishment. I don't collect rough drafts. I do assign them and have them exchange with classmates for suggestions and corrections. They get points for having it in, and if they have questions about what they wrote, grammar, etc., they may ask me. The reason I don't correct the rough draft is because I think it seems a little repetitive | | on my part-I correct the rough draft for errors and information, yet I'll be doing that again when I go over the final drafts. Like I mentioned before though, they may ask me questions about certain things if the would like before they turn in the final draft. I'm not sure how you should punish a rough draft. It's still wrong, but now you have caught it for to be fixed. Are you giving points for the rough draft? If so, I say they get a 0 on the rough draft. Teach a lesson on paraphrasing to the class. Have them paraphrase things from the encylopedias and other books. Also teach them about footnotes. Let them know that it's okay to use some of someone else's work, as long as it it is footnoted and credit is given and as long as the whole entire paper is not footnoted! Good luck with everything!
