I also teach 2nd. When my students start talking, I quietly take out my stop watch and start timing them. As soon as everyone is on task, I stop timing them. I keep a running total and subtract it from recess each day. It doesn't take long for someone to say "she's timing us" and they get back to work. Also, if everyone is doing a good job on their own, then I reward the class with a star. Once the kids have 20 stars, they get to have a star party. This is 30 minutes at the end of a day I choose. The kids get to vote on the party when they have 10 stars. Hope this helps...
