Clip to ScrapBook
I have the students read from the textbook to get background info.. but I agree with the drawing upside down. that's always a favorite in my class. Also, making their own coat-of-arms is extremely popular and really cool for my kids. I give them the symbol for the # kid they are in their family, the meaning of some other symbols and the colors they can use, a pattern drawn on posterboard, and a few guidelines and away they go. They always turn out awesome. I also have students present information to the class or write "Important Stuff" from their reading on the board (which they love doing) that way they share what they thought was really cool or important and they get to write on the blackboard instead of me doing it.
