I hope this helps!

Clip to ScrapBook
I am also a first year 5th grade teacher. I have been teaching now for 3 months and I am like a sponge. I am learning so much from my students. At times I think I am learning more from them than they are from me.
Fortunately,
I do not have much of a discipline problem in my room except for two characters that I have that I constantly have one-to-one talks with. In my classroom, there are numerous reward systems that is clear for children to see and understand. I reward children based on their individual behaviors and the class as a whole. This system has worked very well for my class. If a child
earns 10 behavior stars, he/she is entitled to a computer pass. If the classroom as a whole earns 25 stars, they get a free game period or movie period. We just earned our 25 stars and saw Shrek 2 today! It was so much fun for the children and myself.
I also have a classroom agreement that the class says everyday in unison after the pledge of allegiance. The agreement is a daily reminder of what is expected of them. The agreement goes for the other three fifth grade classes in the school as well. This is very effective since the rules apply for everyone on the grade level.
Aside from the chattiness here and there in the room with my students, I am lucky to have had a great start with my students. I believe with all the positive reinforments posted in the room, the students thrive to achieve the classroom expectations. Constant praisal for positives is a PLUS. It puts a smile to your face and on theirs..I hope I have helped! We all want to praised as adults, imagine the children
