These are actually called mneumonics. Try doing a google search for more ideas. Additionally, it is very helpful to teach kids how to develop their own mneumonic devices.

Also, the letters don't necessarily have to
spell a word; you can use the first letter of each word you are learning as the first letter of each word in a sentence. For example:

Kings play chess on fine glass squares

stands for

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.

and

Every day my snake crawls by.

stands for

Estimate, divide, multiply, subtract, compare, bring down.


For these mneumonics, teach

the students to say the sentence while writing down the first letter of each word. Then, they can go back and fill in the words they are trying to remember.
