Some advice
By Krissy

Clip to ScrapBook
I have had similar situations happen to me in the past and I tried the following which worked out great. I first addressed my class on how important it is to follow directions and to be on task while in centers. They know
I am watching and center work is a part of their grade.

Once I noticed a real problem, I started assigning book reports to be completed every month and by January it became every two weeks. The catch was, I got to choose the book for the child and it was a book they were supposed to be reading during centers. I started picking the books that students were using from my classroom

library and they were not allowed to take it home during that time since it should already have been read. The report was easy, just some summary and response questions. I had several parents complain that their child never read the book that I assigned the report for. Needless to say, after discussing it with the parents, they were no longer angry with me. It also ended my problem with independent reading during centers. Some may think that I was a little rough, but sometimes you have to be tough with those little second graders or they can get the best of you.
