Resignation
By Sue W.

Clip to ScrapBook
You have resigned yourself to leaving teaching. It sounds like you have given it a lot of thought and understand that your sanity and your family are at risk. NO GUILT!!!!! Do not feel you are doing "something wrong", when
you are doing something that is necessary. You have given it more than a fair try.

I would suggest a written letter of intent to resign to your principal first. It would probably be best to schedule an appointment with your principal to hand deliver it to him/her first. It would be embarrassing to the principal if it is sent to higher up administration and then the message comes

back.

You may want to try to schedule the meeting after school if possible, because there may be some stress involved. Not knowing the principal, I don't know if you would be encouraged politely to stay, threatened about leaving or if your decision would be recieved with understanding. The principal can advise you about the actual process of how and when your resignation should be signed.

You have already considered the effect it could have on your teaching license. Some people feel the license is insurance in case they would ever want to return. It sounds like that is not likely in your case, but handle things according to "standard procedure" for your district to leave things on a cordial level. You may not intend to return to teaching but don't burn that bridge behind yourself if it isn't necessary. There can be other options in the future such as a "teacher on special assignment", part time or some kind of small group remedial assignment such as Title I that could work for you.

Here a job must be posted for a certain length of time before interviews and hiring can take place.
If you wait too long your class may have even more disruption with a sub being needed before the replacement comes in. It would be better if that is arranged and you can meet with the replacement to help plan for a smooth transition.

Best wishes!
