I would recommend reading Jim Trelease's book The Read Aloud Handbook. He highly recommends reading aloud to children throughout their lives to motivate them to read and open doors for discussion, conversation, bonding, building
vocabulary, etc. It includes an extensive bibliography of books to chose from. This is completely separate from reading homework, assignments or other shared reading. The child gets the pleasure of time with the parent simply listening to a great story. Meanwhile, motivation is enhanced and listening comprehension is increased effortlessly. Research has shown time and again that
reading aloud to children is one of the most beneficial things we can do to improve their own reading. It need not be long, 5-10 minutes but very consistent. Good luck !
