Tattling
By Jennifer

Clip to ScrapBook
One thing I have found to work is a "Tattle Book." I was tired of kids tattling all the time, so I have a journal in my classroom that kids can write their tattles in during their free time (on their way to recess, etc...).
When kids tattle on ridicuous things, it seems that they just need to "get it out" then they move on. The book helps them do that. Every so often I open the book and get a good laugh...(ex. "Jill wrote herself a love letter and said it was from me!") Of course you have to set rules for the book (it can't be used to call people names, etc...) As far as name calling and such, unless
you hear it, it is one student's word against another's. If my students are having a problem respecting each other, I have a lot of success in having a group discussion. Let them know there is a problem in the class, and it is unacceptable. Then have them create consequences to disrespectful behavior. You could also have everyone write down a name they have been called in the past and discuss how it made them feel.
