reading workshop By Kim

I sympathize with you here. I would like to read the replies too. My dist. has a literature phonics program but expects us to also do the reading workshop for 45 min. a day. I can't get it all in. My advice for your| program is start small. Begin with the kids that need the most help and can't work on their own. Once you get them going smoothly, add another group. When I do 3 groups I organize it on a chart or the board so I know exactly who goes where and so do they. I give each group a color or shape and put that on everything (the teacher's manual page on a sticky, etc.) I too am an experienced |
| teacher and I find that no matter how much I teach the kids routines, debrief at meetings and enforce consequences, the kids not in a group with me don't get their work done and are too loud. I've tried taking away recess, calling parents, making them write lines, etc. and nothing works. Is there a name to your program? I have had some success with teaching writing this way if I find the time. I just note who needs help on what as I read their papers and grab those kids and do a quick minilesson off the top of my head.
