Perhaps try retelling. Read aloud or have them read a short, simple text. Then ask them to retell the story to you or a parent volunteer to practice including as many key ideas as possible. Later, after practicing they could move on to written retellings or telling a friend. All the students could benefit from this. It is a part of the comprehension piece of DRA assessment if your district uses that. There is a rubric to score the retelling.
