I subbed at a school where kids have a lot of problems. There were a couple of kids really being disrespectful and as I followed the teachers discipline policies, one had to go to the office. I didn't like doing this, because I wasn't sure how the school would view it, but I also decided I shouldn't tolorate that behavior. After that child left the room, I took the time to talk to the students about why they came to school and what they wanted from attending school. The student's attitudes changed a lot and they were much better and more respectful. Sometimes, just taking the time to talk & listen can show them that you care.
Good Luck, it is not always easy.
P.S. I had lots of calls and requests from that school after that.
