I like to read historical fiction with 5th graders because I love American History. Some books I've used are:
Pedro's Journal by Pam Conrad (Christopher Columbus)
A Lion To Guard Us (a voyage to Jamestown)
Sign of the Beaver (takes place right after the French and Indian War)
Johnny Tremain-Revolutionary War from the Patriots' point of view
My Brother Sam is Dead-same war but from the Loyalists' point of view
Ghost Cadet-Civil War-from the Southerners' point of viewWe start a K-W-L chart with each subject the book relates to and fill out before we read and as we learn new things in | |
Social Studies or in the book itself.I've also read Bridge to Terabithia (friendship and death), Julie of the Wolves (Inuit Indians), and Sounder. I think Sing Down the Moon might be good to read when teaching a unit on Indians. I haven't read that with students yet.
