Novels
By 5th Grade

Clip to ScrapBook
I like to read historical fiction with 5th graders because I love American History. Some books I've used are:
Pedro's Journal by Pam Conrad (Christopher Columbus)
A Lion To Guard Us (a voyage to Jamestown)
Sign
of the Beaver (takes place right after the French and Indian War)
Johnny Tremain-Revolutionary War from the Patriots' point of view
My Brother Sam is Dead-same war but from the Loyalists' point of view
Ghost Cadet-Civil War-from the Southerners' point of view

We start a K-W-L chart with each subject the book relates to and fill out before we read and as we learn new things in

Social Studies or in the book itself.

I've also read Bridge to Terabithia (friendship and death), Julie of the Wolves (Inuit Indians), and Sounder.

I think Sing Down the Moon might be good to read when teaching a unit on Indians. I haven't read that with students yet.
