I was there

Clip to ScrapBook
I just want to let you know, my first year was bad too. I work in the inner city also and I am going on my 5th year. The first year is always the worse. Here are some things I did to change things. Do you give prizes for
good behavior. Be very firm and strict. Let them know you are there to support them, but you are not their friend, your their teacher. Sometimes if I have a student who is out of control I will let them sit in the back and color until they relax. Also take them aside and speak with them, don't yell at them or threaten to call home infront of the other students. Try not to yell no matter
what! Believe me I was yelling the whole time my first year, but it got me know where. The kids just ignored me and reacted worse. Make sure to really make it worthwhile to be good in your class. Also, make sure with the problem children you document everything and get them tested for special education! Good luck. If you need any help I will be happy to help you. Trust me, a lot of city teachers understand what you are going through. Keep your chin up! Don't quit, but look for a job elsewhere.
