Disorder
By Kerry

Clip to ScrapBook
There's a medical term for this called encopresis I believe. It can be caused by a physical problem, where the lower intestine gets filled and doesn't release but stretches, and over time, it sends a neurological message to the brain that in turn signals as a laxative, and before you know it, there it is. But it can also be emotional. It sounds like your student has some emotional stuff going on; maybe not abuse necessarily, but, definitely some kind of problem that is causing this child to be distressed to the point of not going to the bathroom. Good luck in figuring it out ... don't do it alone, definitely have your team in place (and it sounds like you do!!), and be gentle with your little guy, sounds like he needs some love and understanding.
