"choosing" a grade
By Kiki

Clip to ScrapBook
Well, you pose some very interesting questions. Are you wondering if your job would be harder in middle school or if the kids job is? I can tell you that with all of the paperwork, guidelines, testing, and standards - IT
IS ALL Difficult! Sometimes a student teacher comes out and says that they only want a certain grade/ subject. I think that is pretty unrealistic. For example, you talk about middle school science. There are only 10 middle schools in my district with about 9 science teachers each. So AT BEST you are competing for 90 jobs (and that's if they all retired at the same time)More likely,
maybe 2 of those jobs would become available. Your odds of being hired are kind of slim. Now, all of this depends on your area, of course.
Here's what I did: I selected a school, applied for a job I was certified for, and then told the principal that I would be willing to teach any area there. I guess what I'm saying is to be sure you don't set your sights on a path that is too narrow. After all, many say that the teacher shortage is mythical.
