My Advice

There are many reasons why it's good to sub before you actually get your own class:

1. The principal and staff get to know you and you know them.

2. Become familiar with the "climate" at the schools you sub for.

3.
Become familiar with the teaching materials used by schools.

4. Practice classroom managment, even if it's not your own class.

5. Practice presenting/explaining lessons.

6. Observe how teachers put display things on B.B. Also, see and use their procedures, techniques, ect. You can "borrow" their ideas, methods, etc. for your future class.

Any experience, even if you perceive

it as a negative one, is beneficial. Sometimes, I had awful sub days. I would reflect on why it was so and usually learned something about myself and what I could have done differently. Plus, you discover that there are some schools that you wouldn't want to work for!

I highly suggest that you sub IF you can! Gail (GM)
