I would plan extra time for the conference to have time to discuss this further. I would ask the parent to describe the homework routine and the reaction they are referring to. Some kids act very different at home and it is helpful to know how the parent reacts to their complaints. Then you can probably respond based on how you deal with that child in class. Also, research has shown that the most positive way to get kids to read is to be read TO. Suggest the parents read aloud to the child SEPARATE from the child actually reading.(Suggest they read Jim Trelease's The Read Aloud Handbook ).If a child has a light by their bed, you can often entice them to read at bedtime until they fall asleep. What is the reading routine? Does the child have an active listener who responds positively? Is the child reading something at their level. There are many things to discuss.
