    You can do it

I have students in my class who read and write below grade level. I have other students who exhibit challenges with math. It doesn't mean they belong in first grade though. You need to work with him in guided reading with other kids who may be closer to his reading level, guide him in his writing the same way you do others (I'm sure writing lessons aren't whole class lessons all the time), and modify his assignments. Maybe he will need to repeat grade 2, but in the meantime, you need to focus on what he CAN do and help him improve his weak areas. Do you have centers in your classroom? You can have centers that are tailored more to his needs and you can also differentiate your curriculum. Surely you've had a variety of learning levels in your class before, including kids who are below average as well as above average. (Unless you're a new teacher?)

Also, talk to other teachers as well as your SPED department and guidance counselor to gather some ideas on modifications. Good luck!! Consider this a valuable learning experience that will help make you a good teacher.
