I am VERY aware that there are some children that are "Highly Sensitive" http://www.hsperson.com/ I am a parent to one (He is 21 now and doing awesome in college) Please be assured I KNOW the difference between "shy", "highly sensitive" and "defiant".

HSP is not a disorder or a disease that needs curing. "Being an HSP means your nervous system is more sensitive to subtleties. Your sight, hearing, and sense of smell are not necessarily keener (although they may be). But your brain processes information and reflects on it more deeply."

As I said in my post, this was the first case I have ever seen of defiant mutism, I even went to my principal for advice. It was her who came to observe, and the MOM who decided it was rebelion on the students part.
